SCHOOL-HOUSE

School–House is a response to the lack of urban spaces designed for teenagers. The project reimagines education not as containment, but as engagement. Located at 171 Eddy Street in Providence’s Knowledge District, the site carries a legacy of skilled labor and community empowerment amidst the influence of wealthy universities that support a largely transient population. This project responds with a new typology: the School–House—a hybrid between the one-room schoolhouse and the public house, a space for teens to gather, build, question, collaborate, and invite the city in. The modest scale of the building recalls community-built, makeshift schoolhouses—spaces created out of need. This one too signals a public need and evokes a sense of ownership for its teenagers. Here, teens are invited to gather, build, publish, cook, perform, play, and shape their own space. Two gabled wings—classroom and communal—frame a courtyard that connects students to the street. School–House is a model for youth-centered urban education—rooted in craft, open to the city, and designed for teens to feel ownership, possibility, and belonging.
